Sclerotherapy for varicose veins

The removal of varicose veins is not merely a matter of aesthetics; it also helps to prevent the development of more serious health problems, such as thrombosis, leg ulcers or diseases of the lymphatic system.

Sclerotherapy for varicose veins is used as a primary standalone treatment, focusing on the lower limbs. Owing to its safety and effectiveness, it is now more widely used than the traditional surgical method, which places a greater strain on the body.

Sclerotherapy can also be used as a complement to some of the more invasive methods of varicose vein removal.

Sclerotherapy for varicose veins is suitable for anyone troubled not only by small spider veins but also by large varicose veins, the development of which is influenced by genetic predisposition, an unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, smoking, hormonal fluctuations, insufficient physical activity, prolonged standing or sitting, high blood pressure, or a combination of these factors. Problems may also arise during pregnancy.

The entire procedure takes approximately one hour and is carried out in a comfortable outpatient setting. The vascular specialist first marks the affected veins and disinfects the surrounding skin.

They then use a very fine micro-needle to inject a sclerosing solution into each vein – a special preparation that dissolves the vein wall and closes off the vein.

The injection may cause a slight burning sensation, but this subsides quickly. After the solution has been applied to all the targeted areas, the doctor covers each injection site with a sterile pad and then wraps the entire area in a compression bandage or fits an elastic stocking.

Compression is essential for the success of the procedure, as it ensures that the sealed vein remains closed and the blood cannot find its way back.

You can go home immediately after the procedure. Compression garments must be worn continuously for 4–6 weeks (except when showering). Visible improvement occurs within a month, as the treated veins gradually fade and disappear.

The results of sclerotherapy for varicose veins are usually excellent, but to a certain extent they depend on genetic predisposition and the quality of the vessel wall. Consistent use of compression garments maximises the outcome of the procedure.

After the procedure, we also recommend engaging in active exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling or running, to aid recovery.

Depending on the extent of the varicose veins, sclerotherapy can be repeated after approximately 4 weeks.
